36 marine engineering students on tour: two days of insights, innovation and industry inspiration
This week, 36 first-year students from Fredericia School of Marine and Technical Engineering (FMS) took part in a two-day study trip in North Jutland arranged by ShippingLab in collaboration with Danish Maritime and FMS.
The aim? To connect marine engineering students with the people, technologies, and opportunities shaping the future of Blue Denmark – and to introduce future marine engineers to our exciting industry.
Day one featured visits to Alfa Laval Aalborg and Desmi. At Alfa Laval’s 28,000 m² Test & Training Centre, students explored full-scale maritime technologies – including an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) system, which generates electricity from waste heat. A strong example of how innovation can support the green transition at sea.
At Desmi, the group gained insights into the full production flow – from machining to coating and shipping of mechanical components. They also met a young marine engineer who shared his personal path into the maritime industry, offering students a relatable and inspiring perspective.

Day two continued in Frederikshavn with visits to Orskov Yard and JOBI Værft. At Orskov, students had the chance to step into one of the yard’s floating docks – standing beneath an 8,000-ton Danish naval vessel towering above them. A powerful experience of scale and complexity in modern ship repair.
At JOBI Værft, the group explored a broad mix of past and present: from a reclaimed fishing vessel originally built at the yard in 1962, to the warehouse management system that keeps track of over 10,000 part numbers. A fascinating insight into the continuity and innovation in small-scale shipbuilding.
A big thank you to all the participating companies for your warm welcome and for helping bridge the gap between education and industry.
