For students – Join our Student Advisory Board

Have a say in your student life and your future career opportunities

As a student, you’re juggling lectures, projects, maybe a part-time job. And you’re probably wondering what comes after graduation.

Our Advisory Board won’t give you the answer. But it can help you explore your options, test your interests and get access to opportunities that make student life more relevant and connected to the world beyond your studies.

The boards are created to give students influence and insight into future possibilities within the maritime industry. It’s a space for curiosity and exploration. And for understanding how your skills might be valuable in ways you haven’t considered yet.

Whether you’re into data science, design, business or something totally different, we’d like to hear from you. You might be surprised how your skills and interests can fit into the maritime world.

What is the Advisory Board?

Our boards are a place where students meet up twice each semester to share ideas about student life, career expectations, and learning needs.

Think of it as a student think-tank. As a member, you and your fellow students talk about what motivates you, what’s missing in your education (or how to enhance it), which skills you feel you need to build, and what kinds of events or opportunities you wish to have. We take your input and help turn it into something that will help you explore or further your options by connecting you with the maritime sector.

You might not imagine yourself working on a ship, but you might enjoy analysing data, developing digital solutions, working with complex systems or improving how technology is implemented and used by people. All of those skills are needed in the maritime sector, even if that connection isn’t obvious at first.

Maybe you’d like to experience “A Day in the Life” of someone who has a background similar to yours. Maybe you’d like to hear about what competencies companies look for and what keywords to use when writing a CV. Maybe you know you’ll be taking a course where a maritime case would fit in perfectly. Or maybe you think these are terrible ideas, in which case we want to know, so we can make something you’re actually excited about.

In short, you bring your perspective as a student, and we connect it to opportunities you might not otherwise encounter.

Developing talent and tech for tomorrow

ShippingLab is a non-profit innovation platform where students, universities, and companies come together to experiment with new ideas and technologies. Our mission is to drive the green transition in the maritime sector by developing the talent and tech needed for tomorrow. Yes, those are big ambitions, but the sector is actively looking for new perspectives and skills to move the industry forward.

For many people the word maritime simply means ships or the ocean. In reality, the sector is much more than that. The challenges we focus on are much broader: sustainability, technology, innovation. The industry is expansive and diverse: it needs data analysts, software developers, designers, project managers, and creative thinkers of all kinds. From engineers creating solutions, to maritime engineers installing them, to anthropologists who know how to design them, so people actually make use of the innovations.

ShippingLab is a place for experimentation, learning and collaboration, and the Advisory Board plays an important role in ensuring that our initiatives for students are relevant and worth engaging in.

Why join the Advisory Board?

What to expect as a member

Here’s how it works: we meet twice per semester on your campus for about an hour each time. It’s a relaxed, informal session (snacks included) with a few people where everyone gets to share their thoughts. During these meetings, we typically brainstorm around questions like: What motivates you in your studies right now? What do you feel is missing from your education or campus life? Which skills do you think you’ll need when you graduate, and do you feel you’re getting them? What kinds of events or experiences would help you and your fellow students? You and other board members share your interests and concerns whether it’s “I wish we had more hands-on projects” or “It’d like to meet professionals in the business part of the sector”.

From there, ShipppingLab work with you to turn these inputs and ideas into concrete activities. For example, if a common interest is learning about green technology, we might organize a field trip to a company working on sustainable shipping fuels. If you all express a need for networking, we might set up an event to meet mentors from industry. By joining the Advisory Board, you get to peek into a sector and contribute to big-picture solutions, without any requirement that you pursue a “nautical” career. It’s about discovering how your skills can make a difference in an industry you might not have thought about before.
